Token Female

In my salad days, at a time when gaming news was really only available through magazines, most new fighting games would commonly have a roster that consisted of about a dozen or so male characters and one single female character. Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat, and Killer Instincts were some examples of this, just to name a few. The magazine that I subscribed to at the time would playfully refer to these ladies as the "Token Female" of the game they were in to highlight the fact that gender imbalance at the time was so lop-sided that it was almost as if developers were barely even trying.
These days the macho-ness of the late 80s/early 90s isn't as prevalent in popular culture. Though there is more of a gender balance in these games, it's hard to deny that many female characters aren't also designed to be eye candy for what is still a male dominated audience. But who knows - maybe in a few more years that might have changed as well.

Okay, so if you've been playing along at home, you'll probably have noticed that this picture has taken me a FREAKING LONG TIME. This is partly because at even a 4K resolution this is only about 1/3 of the original size, and also because I went to the trouble of actually putting proper designs on all the bottle labels, scraps of paper, and other random junk (which was actually quite a lot of fun). They're all game related to games that I have played and have left an impression on me over the past 25 or so years.
